Other causes include certain medications, such as angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), acute kidney injury, excessive intake of potassium supplements, and adrenal gland disorders like Addison's disease.


The symptoms of hyperkalemia can vary depending on the severity of the condition. Mild cases may not exhibit any symptoms at all, while severe cases can lead to life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias. Some common symptoms include muscle weakness or numbness, fatigue, palpitations, irregular heartbeats, nausea, and vomiting. Hypokalemia can manifest in several ways, with symptoms ranging from mild to severe. Common symptoms include muscle weakness, fatigue, constipation, muscle cramps, irregular heartbeats, and increased urination. In severe cases, hypokalemia can cause paralysis or even life-threatening cardiac complications.


Diagnosing hypokalemia also requires a series of blood tests to measure potassium levels accurately. Additionally, doctors may also perform urine tests to determine the underlying cause of the condition.


Treatment options for hypokalemia aim to restore potassium levels within the normal range. In mild cases, dietary modifications, such as increasing the intake of potassium-rich foods like bananas or leafy greens, might be sufficient. In more severe cases, potassium supplements may be prescribed. For individuals experiencing life-threatening symptoms, intravenous potassium administration may be necessary to rapidly restore potassium levels.

Hyperkalemia and hypokalemia are two conditions that arise when this balance is disrupted.
